Born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1973, Jan Ellis was a teenager when he began his performing career in the stage and film adaptations of Dalene Matthee's internationally acclaimed novel, Fiela se Kind (Fiela's Child).

Ellis won a South African Vita Award (1988) for his supporting role in Fiela se Kind, and an All African Vita Award (1998) for his supporting role in Paljas. He has also written and produced four plays, and has been nominated for numerous South African Theatre Awards for his acting, writing and producing. He has also performed internationally in Hello & Goodbye.

His other film credits include After the Rain (1999) and Final Solution (2002).
