Pro-SA Americans Fund local movie

Kani’s the ticket to film’s international clout

A South African story told with American funding is being shot in locations around Cape Town. Starring acclaimed actor John Kani as a priest, The Final Solution is set in the pre-election era of 1994 and tells the story of racist farmer Gerrit Wolfaardt (Jan Ellis) and his confession of past crimes.

Production co-ordinator Dipuo Huma said what was remarkable about this film was its relevance in terms of topical debate as well as the fact that the crew was fairly representative.

This is one of the few films being shot in South Africa, about South Africa and where the cast and crew are predominantly South Africans from all sectors of society. The production is also serving as a training ground for new talent.

"Written by the director Cristobal Krusen and based on an idea from a local actor scriptwriter, the film has finally come to fruition and is poised for international distribution on both the big and the small screen"

Huma said the film was funded by concerned groups and organizations in the United States who had an interest in reconciliation in South Africa.

The context of the movie is 1994, close to the country’s historic first democratic elections. A state of chaos looms with the threat of civil war hanging like the sword of Damocles over the nation.

An American news group chooses a more positive story and films a church service where people from both sides of the apartheid divide come together in worship.

While the filming takes place, a white paramilitary group attacks the township. Gunfire is exchanged and the group leader, Jan Hofmeyr flees to the church for sanctuary. When the crowd decides to mete out justice township style, Reverend Peter Lakota refuses them entry insisting that he would turn Hofmeyr over to the authorities.

To quell the situation an Africaner, Wolfaardt, tells the mob he is the one they seek.

He speaks of his hardened racism and being reared on a diet of Hitler’s Mein Kampf before being transformed into an enlightened being.

His personal change is accepted by all except young Moses Moremi, who suffered abuse at his hands.

Huma said the story is told through a series of flashbacks dating to the 60’s where the community comes to realisations about its past present and future.

Ellis, an actor from Tamboerskloof, receives a big break as Wolfaardt in the film. He has enjoyed substantial work in commercials.

The producers are obviously betting on Kani to give the picture international clout. The stage actor, who cut his teeth in Athol Fugard productions, and now director of the Market Theatre, has starred in several big budget foreign films including The Ghost and the Darkness opposite Val Kilmer.

Shooting is taking place in several locations in Cape Town, including Langa Township. The Final Solution is scheduled for international release later in the year.
